Memons Making Waves – United They Are Powerful
The World Memon Organization’s Africa Chapter marked a significant milestone on the 05th October 2025, as it convened its 22nd Annual General Meeting, bringing together stalwart members and enthusiastic newcomers in a celebration of community, compassion, and collective progress.
A Day of Reflection and Renewal
The programme opened with spiritual grace as Haafidh Taahir Kalla’s beautiful recitation of the Holy Qur’aan set a reflective tone for the gathering. This was followed by a heartwarming video presentation showcasing the remarkable work of the Ladies Wing and the sisters of Jama’atun Nisaa, whose dedication to community service continues to inspire.
Though unable to attend in person, Sr Raeesa Joosab shared her insights via video, elaborating on the Africa Chapter’s Youth Wing activities and generating excitement about upcoming initiatives, including the highly anticipated Falcon Bridge project.
Celebrating Milestones and Legacy
Regional President Mr Ahmed Gani delivered an inspiring welcome address, highlighting a particularly proud moment: the organization’s donation towards the Africa Chapter’s first legacy project, the PMT Burial Centre. This achievement represents more than infrastructure—it symbolizes the community’s commitment to caring for its members from cradle to grave.
Secretary Mr Aslam Kalla presented a comprehensive report of the 2024 activities, while Treasurer Naeem Hassim provided detailed financial insights. Of particular note was the evolution of the monthly welfare cases into the “Empower a Family Project,” a holistic initiative that addresses both daily necessities and medical needs by placing beneficiaries on medical aid schemes. This transformation reflects the organization’s maturing approach to sustainable welfare support.
Looking Forward: Projects That Build Bridges
The Falcon Bridge project emerged as a focal point of discussion, with Mr Riaz Arbee providing in-depth insights into this anticipated initiative. Mr Ahmed Gani’s enthusiasm for the project was palpable, as he expressed interest in potentially replicating the concept locally—a testament to visionary thinking that could multiply the project’s impact.
Ms Fazila AK Ismail graciously acknowledged Sr Halima Abdoola (Chair of the WMO Africa Ladies Wing) for her continued support and dedication to all the numerous WMO Africa Ladies Wing projects, the esteemed guests, the Regional Management Committee, and the Regional Management Committee and Office Bearers. Her excitement about the growth of the Gauteng Ladies Wing under Ms Farida Mahomed’s guidance, InshaAllah, signals promising developments in women’s leadership within the organization.
Feizul Ayob and Haroon Gutta provided updates on another ambitious upcoming legacy project: a retirement village. While acknowledging some outstanding issues, there is optimism that under Mr Haroon Kalla’s supervision and drive, this project will soon come to fruition, further expanding WMO’s cradle-to-grave support system.
Strength in Numbers, Power in Unity
Mr Ahmed Gani expressed justifiable pride in the influx of new members since 2023, emphasizing that growth is not merely numerical but represents a strengthening of the organization’s capacity to serve. His call for active participation resonated throughout the venue, reminding all present that WMO’s power lies in collective engagement.
The warm welcome extended to new life members and Trustee Mr Mohamed Max Joosub underscored the organization’s inclusive spirit and its commitment to nurturing leadership at all levels.
The Spirit of Community
As the programme concluded with a closing dua by Ml Naeem, attendees gathered over a scrumptious lunch and tea, where the true essence of WMO manifested: old friends reminisced, new members received warm introductions, and networking flourished. These moments of connection are the threads that weave the fabric of community strength.
