World Memon Organisation North America Chapter followed in the footsteps of the legendary Nelson Mandela and organised a spectacular cricket tournament to unite the Memons from across the US of A.
On the 14th of June, Mr. Bashir Akuly (VP – WMO NA) collaborated with Mr. Javaid Khandwala, a stalwart of Chicago Memon Association to host the first Memon Cricket Night at the sprawling Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center in the suburb of Glen Ellyn, on the outskirts of Chicago city.
4 teams from different regions of the Chicago metropolitan area participated in the tournament with the North Side being crowned eventual winners.
The Memons from Chicagoland came out in full force to cheer for their teams. Each boundary got the crowd on their feet, every dropped catch drew a gasp and many close matches had the spectators on the edge of their seats. The matches went late into the night with the finals being concluded in the wee hours of the morning but the crowds remained glued to their seats till the last ball was bowled. The first Memon Cricket night was a colossal success.
We are very pleased with the encouraging response to the cricket tournament and are thankful to Mr. Asif Rangoonwala, Mr. Arif Sattar, Mr. Ghaffar Variend, Mr. Mikhael Essa, Mr Asif Usman and Mr. Talha Naviwala for their steadfast support towards organising the event. WMO North America Chapter shall follow up with many more sporting events in the coming months to unite not only the Memon community but people from all corners of the world who have migrated to this great nation and now call it home.
It is indeed true that sports has the power to inspire, to unite and could perhaps even change the World. Take a bow, Madiba.
